The unforgettable opening of the film features Fonda undressing in zero gravity.  In the future, in the year 40,000 Barbarella is tasked with a mission by the President of Earth to find Durand Durand.  He is the creator of the Positronic Ray, a weapon that could be used to destroy Earth. She encounters various unusual people, an angel, a wicked queen, and oddly strange life forms, including robotic warriors.  Along the way, the erotic Barbarella is helped by handsome men anxious to have intimate quality time with her.  Her adventure is action packed with the desirable Barbarella outfitted with some very sexy costumes.

She must travel in her space ship to the far reaches of space to find him and destroy the weapon.  She crashes her ship upon arriving on the 16th planet of the system, Tau Ceti and is soon after attacked by evil children and their wicked biting dolls. She is rescued by an Iceman who she pays back his life saving of her by making love to him, the old fashioned way, something she is not accustomed to as sex is accomplished with a magic pill.

She leaves the planet and crashes into a labyrinth inhabited by outcasts from Sogo. A blind angel Pygar finds her who has lost his will to fly which is restored after Barbarella makes love to him, again the old fashioned way which she has become very fond of. He flies her to Sogo where they are both captured Sogo's Black Queen. There, they learn of the Matmos, a living energy in liquid form, powered by evil thoughts and used as an energy source in Sogo.

She is rescued by the underground leader Captain Dildano who decides to help her joining in pursuit of Durand Durand. Not to be inconsistent she makes love to Dildano, however with the modern sex pill instead of having intercourse.

Barbarella
She finds Durand Durand and becomes compromised by his devious ways. He places her in an excessive-pleasure machine, which induces fatal sexual pleasure. She outlasts the machine, which shuts down. He wants to become Sogo's new leader by overthrowing the Black Queen, which requires his Positronic Ray and access to the chamber of dreams. Durand takes Barbarella to the chamber, locking her inside with the invisible key.

The Black Queen becomes involved with Barbarella, who claims that if two people are in the chamber at the same time the Matmos will devour them. Not to be outdone, Durand seizes control of Sogo, as Dildano and his rebels begin their attack on the city. The Black Queen retaliates, releasing the Matmos to destroy Sogo. Protected by what the Black Queen calls Barbarella's innocence, they escape the Matmos and find Pygar; the angel clutches them in his arms and flies off.

When Barbarella asks Pygar why he saved a tyrant, he replies: "An angel has no memory."  Barbarella has completed her mission in what is surely the very sexiest Sci-fi ever.  Sexiest film in the science fiction genre or not, Barbarella is a classic
