In this 2010 musical drama movie, Christina Aguilera plays Ali Rose who quits her waitress job in the midwest and takes a Greyhound Bus one way to Los Angeles. She has a dream that she can make it as a singer in the City of Angeles. She has a very difficult time finding work, failing at every audition until by mistake finds herself in a burlesque club on Sunset Boulevard owned by a real artist of a stripper Tess played by Cher. The clubs tag is "the best view on Sunset Boulevard although the club has no windows - it is prime real estate.
She is surrounded by beautiful babes as she sings Welcome to Burlesques "Show a little more. Show a little less. Add a little smoke. Welcome to Burlesque. Everything you dream of. But never can possess. Nothing's what it seems. Welcome to Burlesque."
Ali decides to pursue a career on stage as she knows in her heart she has found herself in the club. Befriending Jack, a bartender arranges an audition so Ali can have a chance to work in the club however Tess underestimates her talent and rejects her without even giving her a chance. She takes on the job as a cocktail waitress without Cher's approval just to be part of the magnificent showcase she has discovered.
While Jack's finance is in New York City on a never-ending acting gig, he and Ali become roommates as Ali's apartment is vandalized. Apparently, there is a romantic attraction but they are only friends even though Jack and Ali have underlying interests in one another. He writes a song but he is very shy and refuses to allow Ali to see his work.
Tess is overwhelmed with the business and financial side of the club especially due to a big balloon payment sue on the mortgage coming up. He ex husband wants to sell the club but Tess dismisses the notion. The club's manager and her best friend Sean is her strongest supporter although he begins to soften as the financial responsibilities are beyond reach.
Marcus, a wealthy real estate developer has offered to buy the club from Tess however his intentions are other than what he lets on. Tess, is as stubborn as imaginable, not interested in Marcus handsome offer - she does not want to give up her club, it is her life. Marcus becomes interested in Ali and especially her talent which blossoms into short of a romantic affair as Ali is a midwest old fashioned girl, unlike the type of babe that Marcus is used to.
When one of the dancers becomes pregnant, auditions are held to replace her giving Ali the opportunity to become a burlesque performer. After performing "Wagon Wheel Watusi", Ali convinces Tess to allow her to become one of the club's dancers, much to the annoyance of Nikki, the lead performer who is always late and caught drinking before numbers. One day Ali has to replace Nikki on stage because she is too drunk to perform. Nikki sabotages the performance by turning off the music that the dancers usually lip sync to, but before the curtain is dropped down, Ali impresses everyone with her amazing singing skills. Afterward, Nikki has a complete blowout with Tess and storms off.
Ali had tried to persuade Tess to change the show from "lip syncing" to actually singing the songs but Tess will have none of it claiming, the clubs patrons come to hear the real performers sing while the club's dancers mimic the lyrics. After her actually singing the lyrics flawlessly she exclaims, "Tess I tried to tell you." Tess replies, "I didn't know you could sing like that." Tess immediately decides to have Ali become the main star of a whole new show at the club.
The Club becomes a much bigger success than ever before with the new acts and Ali's performances. Nikki comes back and the entire dance routine is perfected with sold out shows, however, the club still will never have enough revenue to pay the mortgage. Ali and Nick became passionate making love finally as Nick realizes she is the girl for him however they have a falling out of their relationship-friendship over his fiance returning and finding Ali living in his apartment. Taking advantage Marcus becomes busy escorting Ali but his intentions are more inclined to be considered as exploiting her using her as an arm piece and attempting to get her to leave the Burlesques Club that he is still hoping to purchase.
At a party at his home overlooking Los Angeles, he boasts how his view is the best in town because he bought "air rights" above property that could have blocked his view. Later on, she discovers a scale model of a project that he is pursuing that has the address of the club, however, the is no club. She becomes agitated with him accusing him of not being truthful with Tess about buying the club because he loves it. The best view on Sunset Boulevard is about to become a giant condominium, which is the only reason Marcus wants to buy the club. They exchange some frustrated words with Marcus defending himself claiming that he is not a bad guy, he is getting Tess out of trouble with a big check as she is going to lose the club and have nothing. Ali responds, "You're, not the bad guy, you are just the wrong guy."
Arriving at the club Ali confronts Tess as she is preparing to surrender to Marcus's offer. "Dam it Tess, you better listen to me now," Stunned, she gives in. The next scene is where Tess and Ali enter a real estate office that is across the street where a high rise condominium is under construction. Together they explain that his great view of Los Angeles overlooking Sunset Boulevard will be a "non view" as if he doesn't buy the air rights above the Burlesques Club and Tess sells to Marcus his property value will fall creating a major financial loss for him.
Together they return to the club where Tess's ex-husband is drawing up bankruptcy plans and listing what they can salvage when Tess hands him a giant check buying him out. Tess's Burlesque Club is saved thanks to a clever Ali and Marcus's big mouth. That evening as Ali is getting ready for her acts Nick arrives asking for Alis' forgiveness, "I never should have let you go, please forgive me, " He then hands her a musical score that he completed in which she says can I read it and he remarks, No you can sing it, That song is the crescendo of the entire movie - Show Me How You Burlesque." And man o man does Chritina Aguilera ever sing that song. She is absolutely out of the world on this tune. In reality, Aguilera wrote the song - The is above, it will leave you speechless as it did me.
