The lewd comic books affectionately called the Tijuana Bibles are collector items. No one ever said that dirty jokes, and stories with sexual relevance would not hold the attention of men dearly.

Its virtuous name-sake, the wild and sinful Tijuana, is testament to the fact that Tijuana is duly suited to have the rank as the 2nd greatest red light district in the world, save Amsterdam,"bar none".

The Tijuana Bibles were pornographic comic books that were published from the 1920s to the early 1960s.  They were X-rated obscene parodies of popular newspaper comic strips including Barney Google, Dagwood and Blondie, Dick Tracy, Little Orphan Annie, Archie, Superman, Spiderman, Disney, and other comic strip themes. Some were stories that included characters based on movie stars taking pokes at Mae West, Clark Gable, and Joan Crawford.

The stories were a dark side of humor often including popular dirty jokes illustrated in comic styled art. The content depicted graphic sexual encounters incorporating the characters from cartoons, and Hollywood actors, without consent, violating copyright and libel laws.  The writers, artists and publishers, were anonymous as the publications were illegal. 

The bibles featured exaggerated tabloid sex scandals that were popular involving Hollywood Movie Stars which used a likeness of those stars with their names hardly altered. In 1939 the Tijuana Bibles obscenely lampooned Mrs. Wallis Simpson and her husband the Duke of Windsor who abdicated the throne choosing not be the King of England in order to marry a divorced woman. Al Capone, and Machine Gun Kelly were featured in a series of bibles, as were sports heroes like Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis.

The bibles were printed in a series of ten which were printed at once on large paper and cut, collated, folded and stapled.  They were mostly eight pages printed mostly in black and white, and later in color.  By design the porno like comic books were formatted as pocket sized allowing the easy concealment from prying eyes.  There was a great demand among young men for the Tijuana Bibles which saw a new series of ten bibles being published every three or four months.

The name Tijuana Bibles was first noted in Southern California in the 40s, as myth would have it, it was conceived that the bibles were printed south of the border in Tijuana ( well known for its sex trade and x-rated off color entertainment ) and smuggled into the U.S.A. 

The 2nd half of the provocative name "bibles" was jokingly a parody much like the content and themes that the publications thrived on.  Prior to that the bibles were entitled with phony names like the London Press, La France Publishing, and Tabasco Publishing Co. in London, Paris, and Havana.

The Tijuana Bibles were sold for 25 cents under the counter at bars, garages, tobacco shops, barber shops, and burlesque houses.  They were truly the very first underground comic books printed by entrepreneurs that also printed pornographic playing cards.

Why I Don't Call Them Whores

It is rather a simple explanation - I want to be a nice considerate guy and not demean any women.  Also, I have come to accept the belief that women especially ladies of the night are divine and under the custodian of Aphodite - Venus, the Goddess of Love.  In that sense how could a lady be made to bare such an indignant name.  

About 15 years ago a lady friend in San Diego exclaimed, "Jeffrey, are you fucking those whores in Coahuila."  To be honest I was a bit mortified because the friend was also my landlord and she was also a very beautiful lady.  I never would have expected her to say anything like that. I looked her right in the eyes and stalled for a moment, I wasn't sure what to say to her so that pause was well suited for this obscure question.` "They`are not whores," I said softly, "They are lovely ladies as beautiful as you could imagine, and yes I have made love to a few of them."  Her reply was almost as unbelievable as her question, "OK Casanova, I cannot blame you much."  It is no secret, especially in Southern California, that some of the most beautiful women imaginable are Tijuana hookers. 

I never liked the word - "whore."  It was to me like the "N" word, and certainly not a very nice description for a lady who is in the sex trade. For me, avoiding the use this vulgar word was just a much more classy way of conversation. Although, it is in my character to be a gentleman and not be offensive; there is a fundamental belief I have that prohibits me from exhibiting any disrespect or rudeness towards women - I believe that God is a woman. According to Greek and Roman Mythology prostitutes are connected to the divinity therefore they are worthy of great respect. Prostitutes are protected by Aphrodite - Venus, the Goddess of Love; who was born anew every morning only to become a ‘whore’ every evening.  




The philosopher, Plato and for the members of the Florentine Platonic Academy – Venus had two aspects: she was an earthly goddess who aroused humans to physical love or she was a heavenly goddess who inspired intellectual love in them. Plato further argued that contemplation of physical beauty allowed the mind to better understand spiritual beauty.   

Earlier today when I was thinking about this I looked up the meaning of the word "whore" and its origins. I have copy-pasted that content below so you may understand what went through my mind and how I decided to make such a humble post.  You see I am not ashamed to frequent Tijuana's men's clubs where sex is offered in exchange for dollars. I have been single for many years and this method of companionship just seems a better way to have the intimate company.  

I could not get through the dictionary meaning and origin of the word whore as outlined below - I became rather repulsed which tends to help explain why I chose not to label the beautiful ladies that work in Tijuana's bordellos of La Coahuila, Zona Norte Red Light District as such.

Oh, one more thing - I never pay for sex, however I do give the lady some cash usually very generously explaining that I would not pay for sex but here is some cash so you can buy a new dress or have a nice lunch on me tomorrow.  I have lived in Tijuana since February of 2004 so it has been the case that I'll often meet the lady for lunch.
