In the 20s and 30s Tijuana's Red Light District was very much like what is portrayed in this movie.

Why I Don't Call Them Whores

Aphrodite - Venus, the Goddess of Love and protector of prostitutes

It is rather a simple explanation - I want to be a nice considerate guy and not demean any women.  Also, I have come to accept the belief that women especially ladies of the night are divine and under the custodian of Aphodite - Venus, the Goddess of Love.  In that sense how could a lady be made to bare such an indignant name.  

About 15 years ago a lady friend in San Diego exclaimed, "Jeffrey, are you fucking those whores in Coahuila."  To be honest I was a bit mortified because the friend was also my landlord and she was also a very beautiful lady.  I never would have expected her to say anything like that. I looked her right in the eyes and stalled for a moment, I wasn't sure what to say to her so that pause was well suited for this obscure question.` "They`are not whores," I said softly, "They are lovely ladies as beautiful as you could imagine, and yes I have made love to a few of them."  Her reply was almost as unbelievable as her question, "OK Casanova, I cannot blame you much."  It is no secret, especially in Southern California, that some of the most beautiful women imaginable are Tijuana hookers. 

I never liked the word - "whore."  It was to me like the "N" word, and certainly not a very nice description for a lady who is in the sex trade. For me, avoiding the use this vulgar word was just a much more classy way of conversation. Although, it is in my character to be a gentleman and not be offensive; there is a fundamental belief I have that prohibits me from exhibiting any disrespect or rudeness towards women - I believe that God is a woman. According to Greek and Roman Mythology prostitutes are connected to the divinity therefore they are worthy of great respect. Prostitutes are protected by Aphrodite - Venus, the Goddess of Love; who was born anew every morning only to become a ‘whore’ every evening.  




The philosopher, Plato and for the members of the Florentine Platonic Academy – Venus had two aspects: she was an earthly goddess who aroused humans to physical love or she was a heavenly goddess who inspired intellectual love in them. Plato further argued that contemplation of physical beauty allowed the mind to better understand spiritual beauty.   

Earlier today when I was thinking about this I looked up the meaning of the word "whore" and its origins. I have copy-pasted that content below so you may understand what went through my mind and how I decided to make such a humble post.  You see I am not ashamed to frequent Tijuana's men's clubs where sex is offered in exchange for dollars. I have been single for many years and this method of companionship just seems a better way to have the intimate company.  

I could not get through the dictionary meaning and origin of the word whore as outlined below - I became rather repulsed which tends to help explain why I chose not to label the beautiful ladies that work in Tijuana's bordellos of La Coahuila, Zona Norte Red Light District as such.

Oh, one more thing - I never pay for sex, however I do give the lady some cash usually very generously explaining that I would not pay for sex but here is some cash so you can buy a new dress or have a nice lunch on me tomorrow.  I have lived in Tijuana since February of 2004 so it has been the case that I'll often meet the lady for lunch.

The vulgar Roman word was scortum, literally "skin, hide." Another term was lupa, literally "she-wolf" (preserved in Spanish loba, Italian lupa, French louve ; see wolf ). And of course there was prostituta, literally "placed in front," thus "publicly exposed," from the fem. past participle of prostituere (see prostitute ). Another Old Norse term was skækja, which yielded Danish skøge, Swedish sköka ; probably from Middle Low German schoke, which is perhaps from schode "foreskin of a horse's penis," perhaps with the sense of "skin" (cf. Sanskrit vecya is a derivation of veca- "house, dwelling," especially "house of ill-repute, brothel." Another term, pumccali, means literally "one who runs after men." Avestan jahika is literally "woman," but only of evil creatures; another term is kunairi, from pejorative prefix ku- + nairi "woman." The wh- spelling became current 16c. A general term of abuse from at least 13c. Whore of Babylon is from Rev. xvii:1, 5, etc.

Tijuana's Red Light District is world renowned and has been for nearly 100 years. In 1920 the New York Times printed a story including this quote.  

"In Tijuana there ain't no ten commandments. There,the weary and law oppressed may find an oasis in the desert, a place where he may rest his tired foot on a brass rail and drink to the health of Pancho Via, or whoever it was who invented Mexico."
